Zuari Bridge: The Landmark Connecting Goa to a New Era of Development

The New Zuari Bridge marks a major milestone in Goa’s infrastructure development. The eight-lane cable-stayed bridge strengthens connectivity between North and South Goa, adds road capacity, improves arrangements for heavy-vehicle movement and reduces dependence on the old crossing. The project reflects the Goa Government’s continued focus on modern infrastructure and public convenience in coordination with the Union Government.

From Traffic Challenges to Modern Connectivity

For decades, the old Zuari Bridge served as a vital link between North and South Goa. It carried commuters, tourists and commercial vehicles along the Panaji–Margao highway. As traffic demands increased, the crossing faced greater pressure, while periodic inspections and maintenance sometimes required authorities to divert vehicles through alternative routes.

These challenges highlighted the need for modern infrastructure that could support Goa’s growing mobility requirements. The New Zuari Bridge addresses this need by providing an expanded road corridor across the Zuari River and strengthening connectivity along National Highway 66.

An Engineering Milestone for Goa

Constructed at an approximate cost of ₹2,530 crore, the New Zuari Bridge forms part of a 13.20-km project that includes the bridge and its approach roads between Bambolim and Verna. The cable-stayed main bridge spans approximately 640 metres and forms the centrepiece of an eight-lane corridor designed to accommodate substantial traffic volumes.

The bridge uses modern engineering to support road connectivity across one of Goa’s most important river crossings. Its distinctive pylons and sweeping structure also create a striking landmark along the state’s coastal landscape.

Authorities opened the first four-lane corridor in December 2022 and the second in December 2023, bringing the full eight-lane bridge infrastructure into operation.

Shorter Journeys, Stronger Connections

The new bridge strengthens road connectivity between North and South Goa, supporting travel between major centres such as Panaji, Margao and Vasco. The additional road capacity helps manage traffic along NH-66 and improves the infrastructure available to daily commuters, tourists and commercial transport operators.

The project is also associated with claims that travel time between North and South Goa has fallen from around 90 minutes to 45 minutes. However, journey times vary by origin, destination and traffic conditions.

By strengthening an important transport corridor, the bridge supports the movement of people and goods and improves access to tourism and commercial destinations across the state.

Connecting Infrastructure with Tourism

The New Zuari Bridge offers opportunities beyond transportation. Its impressive design has the potential to make it a tourism landmark, adding another attraction to Goa’s coastal landscape.

In May 2025, the Union Government announced plans for observatory towers and viewing galleries under a proposed ₹270.07-crore tourism development project. The plans include attractions such as a revolving restaurant and an art gallery, with the aim of creating new visitor experiences and supporting related economic activity.

These proposed facilities could expand the bridge’s role from a transport link to a destination that combines engineering, panoramic views and tourism.

Building a More Connected Goa

The New Zuari Bridge represents a major investment in Goa’s road infrastructure. By adding road capacity, strengthening the North–South corridor and supporting future tourism opportunities, the project addresses important transport needs while creating scope for further development.

Through continued infrastructure development in coordination with the Union Government, Goa is strengthening the links that connect its people, businesses and destinations. The bridge stands as a prominent example of modern engineering serving the state’s mobility needs and long-term development.
