Goa will join a nationwide coastal conservation drive on September 19, with clean-up activities planned across 25 beaches as part of Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0.
Goa is set to turn its coastline into a large-scale clean-up zone this Saturday, with communities, volunteers and organisations coming together across 25 beaches as part of the fifth edition of Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar (SSSS 5.0).
The campaign, which focuses on reducing marine pollution and protecting coastal ecosystems, will bring the message of clean and healthy oceans directly to Goa’s shores. The nationwide initiative is being led by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and aims to turn public awareness into collective action.
25 Goa beaches to take part
The Goa campaign will cover beaches across the state, including Baina, Baga, Calangute, Miramar, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim, Palolem, Colva, Benaulim, Majorda, Betalbatim, Mobor, Velsao, Arambol and Old Anchor, among others.
The clean-up drive will form part of a wider national programme being held at more than 100 coastal locations. Goa’s participation places its long coastline at the centre of the campaign’s message on marine conservation.
The initiative also aims to involve citizens, students, youth groups, coastal communities and volunteers, encouraging people to take an active role in keeping beaches and marine ecosystems clean.

More than just a beach clean-up
SSSS 5.0 goes beyond collecting waste from beaches. The campaign also promotes awareness about plastic pollution, single-use plastics and responsible environmental practices.
One of its key components is the Ocean Conservation Pledge, which encourages citizens and organisations to commit to reducing marine litter, avoiding single-use plastics and protecting ocean ecosystems. Participants can take the pledge online and receive a certificate of participation.
Goa will also see activities such as marathons, cyclothons, human chains and the Ocean Olympiad, aimed at bringing more people into conversations around ocean conservation.
Goa’s coastline, Goa’s responsibility
For a coastal state where beaches are closely connected to tourism, fishing and everyday livelihoods, keeping the shoreline clean has an impact far beyond appearances.
The campaign also highlights the link between a healthy coastline and Goa’s Blue Economy, which includes tourism, fisheries, trade and other ocean-linked activities.
The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, is also supporting the campaign. The institution has reaffirmed its commitment to ocean conservation through the Ocean Conservation Pledge and will coordinate the coastal clean-up drive in the state.
The Goa programme is expected to draw participation from government officials, environmental groups, local communities and citizens, turning September 19 into a day of collective action for the state’s coastline.
With 25 beaches joining the campaign, Goa’s message is simple: a cleaner coast begins with the people who live, work and spend time along it.
