Goa’s long-running legal battle to protect the Mhadei river has entered a fresh round of political commentary, after a senior Union Minister suggested Karnataka step back from the courtroom, and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant made it clear that Goa will win this case

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi recently urged the Karnataka government to withdraw its pending Supreme Court cases in the Mhadei dispute.

As per the reports, the Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant declined to wade into

Karnataka’s internal politics,  and added, “Supreme Court case and Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal case are all legal issues. Hence, who said what in Karnataka, I have no comments on it.”

But on the point of Goa’s position, he left no room for ambiguity by adding, “We have our legal panel and Advocate General fighting for this case. We will fight this case till the end. It’s a definite win for Goa in the Mhadei case.”

Why the Issue matters

The dispute centres on Karnataka’s plans to divert Mhadei water through the Kalasa-Bhanduri project, which Goa says would starve the river of the flow that sustains drinking water, irrigation and the ecology of the Western Ghats downstream. 

The Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal allocated water to Karnataka back in 2018, but Goa’s challenge to that award and Karnataka’s parallel litigation remain pending before the apex court. 

The Centre has told Karnataka that environmental and forest clearances for the Kalasa-Bhanduri project will stay on hold until the Supreme Court rules.

The Mhadei case remains an important issue for Goa as it endangers the ecological balance and drinking water security.
