From ‘Majhe Ghar’ to Underground Power: CM Sawant’s Development Push in Nuvem

The Goa Government under Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant is giving a major push to grassroots development in Nuvem, combining housing support with modern electricity infrastructure, renewable energy, water security and improved waste management.

The government’s development-focused approach was showcased at Verna, where more than 100 ‘Majhe Ghar’ certificates were handed over, and major LT underground cabling and electricity infrastructure at Majorda and Betalbatim were inaugurated. The initiatives are aimed at improving essential services, strengthening infrastructure and delivering tangible benefits to residents.

A Development Push Focused on People

The initiatives reflect the Sawant Government’s emphasis on taking development to the grassroots and upgrading infrastructure that directly impacts people’s daily lives.

One of the major achievements is the completion of underground electricity network projects at Majorda and Betalbatim, involving a combined investment of more than ₹74 crore.

The projects replace ageing overhead networks that had become vulnerable to coastal salinity, conductor snapping, falling trees and adverse weather conditions. By shifting the network underground, the government has strengthened the reliability, safety and continuity of power supply for thousands of consumers.

Thousands Benefit from Modern Power Network

The Majorda project, executed at a cost of ₹45.30 crore, has benefited around 4,500 domestic and commercial consumers in Majorda, Utorda and Calata.

The project includes 546.58 km of LT underground cabling, 30 distribution transformer centres converted to underground systems, 234 service pillars, 50 feeder pillars and 1,539 streetlight poles.

At Betalbatim, a further ₹29.40 crore project has benefited around 1,744 consumers. It includes 211.85 km of underground cabling, 26 converted transformer centres, two new transformer centres, 237 service pillars, 49 feeder pillars and 951 streetlight poles.

Together, these projects represent a significant modernisation of the local electricity network under the government’s infrastructure development agenda.

Green Energy Becomes Part of Development

The Sawant Government’s development vision in Nuvem is also extending to renewable energy.

Nearly 27 rooftop solar projects have been sanctioned for institutions including hospitals, schools, churches and temples. Projects covering institutions such as the Mother of Merry Joseph Jesus Church and Shree Mahalasa Narayani Temple, Verna, will contribute towards generating clean energy.

The initiative strengthens the government’s focus on expanding renewable energy while encouraging public and community institutions to adopt sustainable power solutions.

Housing Security Through ‘Majhe Ghar’

The handover of 100+ ‘Majhe Ghar’ certificates further highlights the government’s focus on providing citizens with greater housing security and recognition.

For beneficiaries, the certificates represent an important step towards securing their homes and strengthening their ownership rights.

Water and Waste Management

The development push also extends to basic civic needs.

Nearly 400 water storage tanks are being distributed to residents under the MLA Local Area Development Fund, supporting households in improving their water storage capacity.

A wet waste treatment plant has also been sanctioned for Verna Village Panchayat, adding to the government-backed efforts to strengthen local waste management.

With housing, electricity, renewable energy, water storage and waste management being taken up together, the initiatives showcase CM Pramod Sawant’s focus on people-centric development and stronger infrastructure at the grassroots level.

The Nuvem initiatives underline the Goa Government’s broader approach of ensuring that development reaches local communities and translates into improvements in everyday life.
