Bringing major relief to Goan residents facing rising medical costs, the state government expands the benefits covered under its health insurance scheme, Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana. This announcement raises the annual insurance cover from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh for a family of three and from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for families of four or more members, strengthening the pillars of healthcare provisions in the state. The total claim for a family in a year, however, cannot exceed Rs 6 lakh.

For residents who depend heavily on state-supported healthcare, this change brings a major relief amidst the rising costs. It is a timely response by the government, aiming to provide greater financial security and a broader safety net, when private healthcare bills are becoming burdensome. 

DDSSY has been designed to provide cashless healthcare treatment to eligible residents, by reducing out-of-pocket spending and ensuring that families are provided immediate treatment without a delay due to financial constraints. With the new changes, the scheme now provides another layer of support for routine and high – value medical procedures.

This provision is provided at a time when medical inflation has pushed the cost of procedures, hospital stays, ICU care and more. By increasing the cover amount, the government acknowledges a reality when residents can find themselves under pressure after one serious hospitalization.

Why DDSSY matters to Goans 

DDSSY is a state-run health insurance scheme aiming to provide cashless treatment in approved hospitals. The scheme provides cashless coverage and provides care rather than reimbursement after the provision.

With immediate effect, cashless coverage will reduce the pressure of arranging money prior to treatment and any patient can receive timely treatment. However, the benefits are available at family level rather than at individual standalone limits. 

DDSSY has been aligned with digital health systems allowing cardholders to link their DDSSY coverage with ABHA, the Ayushman Bharat Health Account, helping create a more integrated digital health record ecosystem.
