Goa Government Inaugurates Patradevi Memorial, Putting Goa’s Liberation Heritage in Focus

The Patradevi Martyrs’ Memorial in Goa has been inaugurated as a lasting tribute to the freedom fighters and satyagrahis who sacrificed their lives for Goa’s liberation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the memorial represents national unity, courage, sacrifice and the collective struggle that contributed to Goa’s freedom from Portuguese rule. He recalled the historic 1955 Patradevi Satyagraha and the contribution of freedom fighters from different parts of India. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said the memorial will inspire future generations to remember Goa’s freedom struggle and the patriotism of its martyrs.

Goa Government Redevelops Patradevi Hutatma Smruti Smarak

The Goa Government has completed the major redevelopment of the Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi, strengthening the state’s efforts to preserve and promote the history of Goa’s liberation struggle.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the newly redeveloped memorial on August 26, 2026, in the presence of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Union Minister of State Shripad Y. Naik and other dignitaries.

The project reflects the Goa Government’s continued focus on preserving places associated with the state’s freedom movement and ensuring Goa’s martyrs’ sacrifices remain accessible to future generations.

The redevelopment was undertaken by the Government of Goa through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at an approximate cost of ₹9.50 crore.

The redevelopment of the Patradevi memorial has transformed the site into an immersive educational and commemorative space.

According to the official details, the redeveloped memorial includes:

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates Redeveloped Patradevi Memorial

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi and paid tribute to the Satyagrahis who participated in Goa’s liberation struggle.

He recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters including Karnail Singh from Punjab, Sahodara Devi from Madhya Pradesh and Madhukar Damodar Chaudhary from Maharashtra.

Rajnath Singh described the Patradevi Satyagraha as more than a regional movement, calling it an expression of national consciousness and unity. He also highlighted the role of the Indian Armed Forces in Operation Vijay in 1961, which ended Portuguese rule in Goa.

The Defence Minister also congratulated the Goa Government and Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant for establishing and developing the memorial.
