Goa’s Promise to Regularise Contract Workers Gets SC’s Nod

291 PWD Labour Supply Society workers get relief through regularisation, bringing a major Budget commitment closer to reality

A few weeks ago, Goa’s Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant, announced that the Goa state government has decided to regularise all contract workers.

A dedicated budget has also been approved, and all government departments have been asked to submit data on contract employees to move the regularisation process forward.

At the same time, a bench of the Supreme Court judges, including Justices Sanjay Karol and Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, directs the state government to regularise the workers’ posts and categories assigned to them.

This directive comes at a time when, for years, hundreds of workers who kept Goa’s roads, buildings and public works running have served on temporary status.

The SC’s relief and the job regularisation directive echo exactly what Goa’s own government has been working towards.

The state now has four months to frame a scheme, with the regularisation applying from February 9, 2021, for seniority and pension purposes.

For Goa’s long-serving contract workers, this ruling offers a ray of hope, showing that the government’s push for regularisation is now receiving strong backing from the courts as well.
