Goa has boosted vegetable production by 1,797 tonnes over the past five years

Goa is making steady strides towards agricultural self-reliance, with the State Government strengthening farmer support and boosting local vegetable production. Production has increased by 1,797 tonnes over five years, with 8,938 hectares under cultivation and output reaching 1.126 lakh tonnes, reflecting continued progress towards a Swayampurna Goa.

The Goa Government is also working to provide farmers with better market opportunities and stronger income support. One of the key initiatives is the Promotion of Vegetable with Assured Market Scheme, under which farmers can sell their produce at pre-fixed remunerative rates.

The rise in production has been accompanied by stronger Government support through increased procurement and farmer incentives. Between 2024–25 and 2025–26, scheme supply increased from 120 tonnes to 1,491 tonnes, while the procurement value rose from ₹3 crore to ₹8 crore. Farmer incentives also increased from ₹3.13 lakh to ₹7.48 lakh, reflecting the Government’s continued efforts to strengthen support for the farming community.

The State Government’s Promotion of Vegetable with Assured Market Scheme is helping farmers secure assured markets and remunerative returns. The scheme allows farmers to plan their cropping activities in advance while protecting them from market uncertainties and price fluctuations. Under the initiative, vegetables are procured by the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL) at 150% of the average cost of production of the respective crops.

According to the Goa Economic Survey 2025–26 (up to December 2025), the scheme procured 1,399.76 metric tonnes of vegetables from 1,271 farmers, with an expenditure of ₹4.50 crore.

The rise in vegetable cultivation, combined with assured procurement and improved market opportunities, reflects a broader push to strengthen Goa’s farming community and increase local production.

From increasing local vegetable production and expanding cultivation to providing assured markets, better procurement and stronger incentives, the Goa Government is creating greater opportunities for farmers and strengthening the state’s journey towards a Swayampurna Goa.
