Marking a historic administrative milestone, the newly formed Kushavati district celebrated its first Independence Day function at the Borimol Sports Complex in Quepem, bringing together government officials, public representatives, citizens and local communities for the district’s inaugural national celebration.
Power Minister Ramkrishna alias Sudin Dhavalikar hoisted the national flag at the function, which featured ceremonial programmes, a march past and cultural presentations, marking a significant moment for Goa’s newest district.
The celebration carries special significance as Kushavati was created as Goa’s third district, following the administrative reorganisation of the state. The district was formally established through a government notification dated December 31, 2025, with the aim of strengthening administration, bringing government services closer to citizens and supporting focused regional development.

Kushavati District at a Glance
Kushavati comprises four talukas: Quepem, Sanguem, Canacona and Dharbandora — which were earlier part of South Goa district. Quepem has been notified as the district headquarters.
The district covers approximately 1,962 sq km and stretches across the southern and eastern parts of Goa. Its landscape includes coastal areas, forests, plateaus and mountainous terrain, giving the district a distinctive geographical character.
The name Kushavati comes from the Kushavati River, reflecting the region’s geographical and cultural heritage.
Bringing Administration Closer to the People
The creation of Kushavati is aimed at making district-level governance more accessible to people living in its four talukas. The state government has said that the new district will help reduce the administrative workload on the existing districts and enable faster and more responsive delivery of public services.
The district administration will oversee areas including revenue administration, law and order, implementation of government programmes and delivery of public services across the four talukas.
