Bombay High Court overturns Tarun Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal in the case involving allegations of sexual assault of a former junior colleague in a hotel lift during a 2013 Tehelka event in Goa.
On the evening of November 7, 2013, inside a hotel elevator during Tehelka magazine’s ThinkFest in Goa, something happened that took thirteen years to reach a verdict.
This week, it finally did, and it happened here, in a Goa courtroom, because Goa refused to let it go.

How It Started
Tarun Tejpal was accused by a woman journalist, then editor-in-chief of Tehelka, of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel lift during the ThinkFest event in Goa, alleging the incidents took place on November 7 and 8, 2013. Tejpal resigned within days.
Goa Police registered an FIR, and arrested him.
The trial dragged on for years. In May, a sessions court in Goa acquitted Tejpal, a verdict that activists at the time warned could discourage other survivors from ever coming forward.
Goa Didn’t Let It Rest There
This is the part of the story that makes it distinctly a Goan story, not just a national headline.
The Goa government didn’t accept the acquittal as the final word, it appealed to the Bombay High Court, and the Goa bench heard days of extensive arguments before reserving judgment.
On August 6, 2026, that appeal delivered a result few expected after the 2021 setback: The Bombay High Court overturned the acquittal and convicted Tejpal of rape, with sentencing announced the same day. He is sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment.
It’s worth naming the people who kept this case alive, because convictions like this don’t happen on their own.
Sunita Sawant, the Goa Police investigator who led the probe from the very beginning, was the one who confirmed the sentencing to reporters outside court.
A woman investigator who worked this file for over a decade, and a state government that chose to appeal rather than move on, that combination is a big part of why this verdict landed the way it did.
CM Dr. Pramod Sawant called this verdict a victory of truth.

Why ‘Celebration’ Is the Right Word
It might feel strange to use a word like celebration around a rape case. But talk to people in Goa this week and that’s genuinely the mood, not celebration of the crime, obviously, but of the fact that the system, after thirteen years, an acquittal, and every reason to give up, actually corrected itself.
That matters here specifically because of what the 2021 acquittal had done to the conversation.
There’s also the local dimension. This didn’t happen to Goa, it happened in Goa, was investigated by Goa Police, tried in a Mapusa sessions court, and finally decided by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court.
It Isn’t Over Yet
As per India Today’s Report, Tarun Tejpal claims to be a Political Victim and draws a comparison with Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. He adds that there have been vested interests in his conviction.
Tejpal has said that he will appeal the conviction to the Supreme Court, so this isn’t the final chapter; the case could well run further.
