Fresh UDISE+ data shows 82.3% of Goa’s teachers are women, the highest share of any state or Union Territory in India, nearly 30 points above the national average.

If you’ve ever sat in a Goan classroom, chances are your teacher was a woman. 

As per UDISE+ Report of Union Education Ministry for 2025-26, the total percentage of ladies who have been working as teachers in Goa is at 82.3%, being the highest in India amongst all states and Union Territories. In comparison to the average figure at the national level, which is at 54.9%, the difference is quite huge.

Goa is way ahead not only in comparison to the national trend but even significantly.

When compared with Kerala, a state, which typically takes the first place in educational statistics, Goa also proves to be better.

While in comparison to such states as Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Bihar, Goa is roughly twice as good.

Goa stands out on another parameter, which is worth mentioning.

Up to 95-97% of educators in Goa have undergone professional training, a rate, which few states can boast.

This makes the situation even more interesting.

While Goa is not just showing a really high percentage of women among its teachers, it is also showing a high percentage of professional preparation of those teachers.

And that is what the report says about Goa’s education situation.

At the same time, the numbers for Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are more or less evenly matched, whereas in Assam and West Bengal, male teachers outnumber their female counterparts, underlining just how much of an outlier Goa’s number is on a national map that otherwise skews far more even, or in several states, still tilted toward men.

The number is not merely another entry in a list of education statistics for Goa, but a symbol of the standards set in the state socially and in the sphere of education.
