Kharge’s Personal Attack on Modi Exposes Congress’s Declining Political Decorum

Public representatives do not speak or act in isolation. Every word they utter and every action they take carry influence beyond political platforms. People watch their leaders; supporters look up to them; and party workers often follow the conduct their leaders display. When senior political leaders disregard basic standards of dignity and respect, that behaviour risks setting an example for their supporters and the wider society. Those who hold positions of responsibility must understand that political differences do not give them the licence to cross all boundaries. They must uphold dignity, respect personal boundaries and demonstrate the maturity expected of public representatives.

It is against this backdrop that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s reported remark targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father has once again brought the party’s political discourse under scrutiny. Instead of challenging the Prime Minister on governance, policies and development, Congress leaders continue to resort to personal attacks, raising questions about their ability to mount a meaningful political challenge to Modi’s leadership.

1. Disrespecting Modi’s Family and Late Mother

Kharge’s remark represents another instance in which Congress leaders have crossed the boundaries of political decorum. The party has also faced criticism over the derogatory language used against Prime Minister Modi and his late mother by Congress workers from the stage during Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, Bihar, in August 2025. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with the BJP filing a police complaint and demanding an apology from Congress.

By allowing such incidents to become part of its political narrative, Congress faces serious questions about the respect it extends to the family of the country’s Prime Minister. Kharge’s latest remark about Modi’s late father has further intensified criticism of the party’s approach to political discourse.

2. Questioning Modi’s Caste Identity

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also questioned Prime Minister Modi caste identity during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in February 2024, claiming that Modi was not born into an OBC family and alleging that his community received OBC status later. These claims were disputed, with official records showing that the Modh Ghanchi community was included in Gujarat’s OBC list in 1994, before Modi became Chief Minister.

Instead of focusing on governance, development and public welfare, Rahul Gandhi chose to make Modi’s caste identity a political issue. Such attempts to question a leader’s social background divert attention from meaningful policy debates and raise questions about Congress’s approach to political criticism.

3. Mocking His Humble Beginnings as a Chaiwala

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar’s 2014 remark about Modi’s humble beginnings as a tea seller became another example of a personal attack on the Prime Minister. Aiyar mocked Modi’s prime ministerial ambitions by suggesting that a place could be arranged for him to sell tea at the Congress meeting. Rather than challenging Modi’s political vision, Congress leaders attempted to ridicule his humble background.

However, Modi turned his journey from selling tea to becoming Prime Minister into a symbol of determination and aspiration for millions of Indians. Congress’s attempt to mock his humble beginnings instead highlighted its disconnect with ordinary citizens who take pride in their struggles and achievements.

Strong opposition should challenge the government with facts, policies, constructive criticism, and alternative development plans. However, Congress appears increasingly focused on targeting the Prime Minister personally rather than presenting a convincing political alternative. While political criticism remains an essential part of democracy, dragging family members into political exchanges adds little to public discourse and fails to address people’s concerns.

The statement, ‘Modi will not go,’ reflects the frustration within Congress over the Prime Minister’s continued political influence. It also highlights the party’s growing difficulty in presenting a convincing challenge to Modi’s leadership. Rather than strengthening its political narrative through policies and public outreach, Congress appears caught in a cycle of personal criticism, raising questions about its confidence, direction and ability to offer a credible alternative.

The episode also raises questions about Congress’s internal confidence and its ability to present a united political front. When political messaging revolves around personal attacks rather than public issues, the party risks weakening its own credibility. Repeated criticism of Modi may generate headlines, but it cannot substitute for a clear vision, effective leadership or a development-oriented agenda.

Ultimately, voters judge political parties by their conduct, leadership, policies and ability to fulfil public expectations. Congress must recognise that personal attacks cannot replace constructive political engagement. Prime Minister Modi’s political standing will not be challenged merely through remarks targeting his family. The people will make their judgment through the democratic process, where performance, credibility and public trust matter far more than political rhetoric.
